What is Avocado Oil, How is it Made, and What is it Used for?

First of all, avocado oil, comes from avocados! Avocados are no longer just for guacomole, either!

To produce avocado oil, you must extract the oil from the avocado, which is pressed or extracted from the avocado's flesh or its dried pulp.

The finest "culinary" grade avocado oil is produced through the "cold-pressing" of the avocado oil from the avocado's flesh or outer skin just like olive oil is cold-pressed to produce olive oil.

Avocado oil is also extracted from the avocado's dehydrated pulp, through cold-pressing or chemical (solvent) extraction which is then no longer "food-grade" but can be used as a base in cosmetics.

Avocados are considered a fruit, NOT vegetable!  Avocado oil is a rich and deep-penetrating oil, that is rich in vitamins A, D and E, as well as lecithin and potassium.

Avocado oil provides a number of health benefits including; healing, anti-bacterial and anti-wrinkle benefits for the skin.  Avocado oil also contains proteins, beta-carotene, and more than 20% percent essential unsaturated fatty acids which helps heal sun-damaged age spots and scars.

Avocado oil is a great moisturizer and nourishes the skin, and aids in relieving the dryness and itching of psoriasis and eczema.

Recent studies have shown that avocado oil significantly increases the amount of collagen in the skin as avocado oil easily penetrates the skin and does so more deeply than other plant oils.  Avocado oil also provides strong UV absorption properties, which make it an ideal supplement as a sun blocks.

Avocado oil's numerous beneficial properties are vital when it comes to maintaining healthy hair!  Avocado oil contains essential vitamins that include:

Avocado oil also contains a number of other nutrients including;  amino acids, copper, iron and magnesium which are essential in hair growth and the overall condition of your hair.

Avocado oil contains high amounts of lecithin.  Lecithin is a healthy fat-like substance that is responsible for the avocado oil's penetrative properties which permits easy absorption into the skin.

Avocado oil acts as a "humectant" which means it helps to increase and retain moisture levels in the hair and locks-in hair's shine.

Essential fatty acids in avocado oil help keep hair nourished leaving hair re-hydrated and silky smooth.

The leading cause of dry and brittle hair is lack of nutrients and moisture - avocado oil is one of your "hair's best friends" as avocado oil works wonders on brittle, weak and lifeless hair!

Avocado oil is even more effective when mixed with other beneficial oils such as almond oil or olive oil.

Try the following hair recipe to treat hair or scalp problems:

Avocado Oil Hot Oil Treatment

1 tablespoon of avocado oil
1 teaspoon of olive oil

Mix these two oils together and warm to about 100 degrees (skin temperature).
Massage the warmed oil with your fingertips into your scalp and hair for 5 minutes or longer if possible.
Soak a towel in hot water and then squeeze out excess water and wrap your hair with the towel and leave in place for a minimum of 20-30 minutes after which time rinse and shampoo your hair as usual.

Avocado Hair Masque Recipe

1 tablespoon of avocado oil
1 teaspoon of olive oil
½ tablespoon of honey
1 egg (optional)

Mix the above ingredients together and warm to about 100 degrees (skin temperature).
Massage the warmed oil with your fingertips into your scalp and hair for 5 minutes or longer if possible.
and cover hair completely.
Soak a towel in hot water and then squeeze out excess water and wrap your hair with the towel and leave in place for a minimum of 20-30 minutes after which time rinse and shampoo your hair as usual.

Finally, as avocado oil is a vegetable oil, it can also be used in the production of B100 Biodiesel!
